Charlene Lugar, 76, wife of Senator Richard Lugar (R-Ind), was arrested in McLean, VA Wednesday night. Apparently police saw her car stopped at an intersection with damage and smoke coming from the hood. According to the Associated Press report, she had struck a parked car a few blocks up the road. This is yet another example of strict enforcement of the DUI laws in Fairfax County and throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. This is one tough state when it comes to DUI enforcement and penalties. Depending on her breath alcohol content, this 76 year-old woman could be facing mandatory jail time, a mandatory one year loss of her license, and forced participation in Virginia's Alcohol Safety Action Program (ASAP), even if convicted as a first offense. Anyone who thinks that public figures aren't susceptible to VIrginia DUI enforcement hasn't been reading the news lately. Just ask Alexandria's (former) Chief of Police, David P. Baker, who recently lost his job for a DUI in Arlington County.
