Federal Overight of DC's Metro Makes Sense

The Administration's proposal announced over the weekend to bring DC's Metrorail system and other subway systems under federal regulatory control makes sense.  There needs to be a coherent national strategy to effectively regulate Metro and other subways in a more consistent manner.  In the last few years, DC's Metro has developed a terrible safety record, and yet no significant changes seem to be happening in their safety procedures or policies.  If the local authorities can't do it right, maybe the Feds can.  I say it's worth a try if we want to use these options effectively to increase ridership and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
