Once again, DC Metro rail reports an unexplained train collision that was obviously a result of operator error; computer errors, or both. Fortunately, the three Metro workers that were injured reportedly received only "minor" injuries, but press reports this afternoon confirmed that the wreck was bad enough to have trashed three passenger cars to the point of being irreparable. Nice. It appears that the operator was relatvely inexperienced, and the accident occurred near the end of his shift, suggesting fatigue as a possible cause (in my opinion). My question is simply this. How many more train wrecks is it going to take for DC's Metro to make some serious changes to its safety procedues and operator training? Considering how many people in the DC area use Metro rail daily, I am amazed that there isn't more of an outcry from our elected officials in the region, not to mention the general public. This "business as usual" attitude at Metro is outrageous, and should not be tolerated.
