This weekend I heard a flurry of radio ad spots by the DC Metropolitan Police claiming that they're "cracking down" on motorcyclists who speed, drink and drive, disobey the traffic laws, etc. Cracking down on
motorcyclists? Are you
kidding me? Since when is there any evidence that a disproportionate number of motorcyclists disobey the traffic laws as compared to other drivers?? Every study and piece of empirical evidence I've seen shows that in the overwhelming majority of motorcycle accidents, an automobile was at fault, leading to massive injuries and often fatalities on the part of the riders. And are the auto drivers usually cited by the police? In my experience,
almost never. That's because in the eyes of many police officers, motorcyclists are
presumed guilty of causing the wreck whether they were responsible for it or not. Exhibit "A" as evidence of this tendency is the latest ad campaign sponsored by the DC Police. They'd be better off targeting their "get tough" campaign to ALL drivers in the District's roads and highways, and not single out motorcyclists through the not-so-subtle implicit message that they are all reckless in their riding. Nothing could be further from the truth. This ad campaign simply proves my point that all too often, in the eyes of the police and the courts, motorcyclists are second class citizens -- citizens who need to stand up for their rights!
